DB Captain King Tops Adequan Sam Houston Challenge Trials
Captain Courage gelding survives inquiry to record fastest time at Sam Houston.

DB Captain King, a gelding who qualified to both the Ruidoso and Rainbow Juvenile Invitationals (R) last summer, defeated Pruittized by 1¼ lengths Friday night to post the top qualifying time for the Adequan Sam Houston Derby Challenge at Sam Houston Race Park.
The 10 fastest qualifiers from the four trial races will return to the Texas racetrack on May 11 and vie for the winner's portion of a $65,000-est. purse. The winner of the final will also earn a berth in the Grade 3, $200,000 Adequan Derby Challenge Championship at Prairie Meadows on October 18.
Under jockey Santos Carrizales, DB Captain King bore in under a strong drive in the second trial to post the top qualifying time of :19.851 for 400 yards, a 99 speed index. Following a stewards’ inquiry for possibly impeding into runner-up Pruittized lane, the Captain Courage 3-year-old earned his third win in seven career starts.
Owned and bred in Texas by Dude Briggs, the L.R. “Tooter” Jordan trainee finished second in the Rainbow Juvenile Invitational at Ruidoso Downs last July. He was also a finalist in the Ruidoso Juvenile Invitational. Out of the Sixarun mare Luzarun, he has earned $20,884.
Pursuit Of Duty defeated John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship (G2) winner Raising Kain by a neck in the final trial to post the second-fastest clocking of :19.912. The One Famous Eagle gelding races for owner James Addkison and James Gerhards. Trained by Gerhards and ridden by Santos Carrizales, Pursuit Of Duty has won three of 10 career starts. Bred in Texas from the Heza Fast Man mare Southern Fast Lady, Pursuit Of Duty came into the trials off an allowance win at Sam Houston Race Park on April 4.
