Ofashionsoutherngirl Wins Four Corners Senora
Southern Corona mare gets up to earn her second career stakes win.
April 27, 2014
Rita Danley’s homebred Ofashionsoutherngirl scored a mild upset in Sunday’s $45,000 Four Corners Senora Stakes (RG3) for New Mexico-bred fillies and mares at SunRay Park. The 4-year-old daughter of Southern Corona got up to prevail by a neck at odds of 8-1 with Porfirio Cano up for trainer Fred Danley.
This marked the second career stakes win for Ofashionsoutherngirl, who captured last year’s New Mexico State Fair Breeders’ Derby (RG3) at The Downs at Albuquerque. Her lifetime record now stands at 15-5-1-1 with earnings of $83,953. Ofashionsoutherngirl failed to find the winner’s circle in her first eight starts and then put together a four-race win over a two-month period in Albuquerque from August to October of last year. Her winning streak was snapped in her final start of 2013 when she ran fourth in the New Mexico Fillies and Mares Distaff Championship (RG1). In her lone prior start this year, she finished last in an allowance/optional claiming at Sunland Park in January.
Cervando Molinar’s Lady Secret Dash, a Lordly Way mare who won last year’s Pelican Stakes (RG3) at Albuquerque, rallied to finish second. Alonso and Sylvia Aranda’s WDC Wendys Wine hit the board for the seventh time against stakes foes with a third-place run, although she is still looking for her first stakes victory. Favored Sandys Jesse, a three-time stakes winner last year, finished seventh after being bumped at the start.
