Sam Houston Futurity, Derby Saturday
Sam Houston hosts rich races on Saturday night.
April 17, 2014
Tyler Graham and Conda Maze’s Kiss My Hocks set a track record in his career debut to lead the qualifiers to the $563,950 Sam Houston Futurity (G2) while Sherrie and J.B. Morace’s Cartel Arrangement sets the pace in the $167,300 Sam Houston Derby on Saturday night at Sam Houston Race Park.
Kiss My Hocks (Tempting Dash-Romancing Mary by Tres Seis) led the qualifiers from the 17 trials in a most impressive fashion when he crossed the wire of his 330-yard trial in :16.433, lowering the previous track record of :16:514 set on July 5, 2002, by Pies Power Play. Second-fastest qualifier Quic Carter (Carters Cartel-Quic Jess by Separatist), who was second behind Kiss My Hocks, also raced to faster time than Pies Power Play’s former mark.
The Toby Keeton-trained Kiss My Hocks won by a neck over Marina Nino’s Quic Carter from the Juan Saucedo barn. Quic Carter was timed in :16.474 while making his debut.
Jaime Flores’ Glimpse Of Dash (Glimpse Of Greatness-Double Dash Queen by Moon Shine Dash) impressed in his debut with a 1 3/4-length victory. The Roberto Ramirez-trained gelding was timed in :16.520 for the third-fastest time.
In the derby, Cartel Arrangement (Carters Cartel-Hawks Dancing Straw by Hawkinson) battled to a head-bobbing nose win over Jerry Windham’s homebred third-fastest qualifier Mister Big (Shazoom-Jess An Illusion by Mr Jess Perry). Cartel Arrangement was timed in :17.278 for the 350 yards while Mister Big was clocked in :17.286.
Cartel Arrangement has won three of her five lifetime starts and has won two of her three starts at Sam Houston Race Park. A year ago, the Angel Sanchez-trained filly won her maiden in her second start and then her TQHA Sale Futurity trial at the Houston track.
Mister Big is still a maiden with a pair of seconds from six starts. The Judd Kearl-trained colt qualified for the $1 million Texas Classic Futurity (G1) last November.
Owned by Grant Farms LLC, Tommy Hays and Bobby Barnett, Big Dashing Perry (Mr Jess Perry-Marcys Dashin Bye by Dashin Bye) looks for his second stakes win after taking last year’s $265,775 Firecracker Futurity (G2) by three quarters of a length. The Bobby Martinez-trained winner of four of five races, Big Dashing Perry won his Sam Houston Derby trial by three quarters of a length with the second fastest time of :17.282.
