Grade 1 winner notches another big win.
August 30, 2014
Experienced Grade 1 horse DM Streakn Thru Fire returned to the winner’s circle after the August 30, $200,000 All American Gold Cup (G1) at Ruidoso Downs.
The Walk Thru Fire gelding earned a berth to the $750,000 Champion of Champions (G1) along with the win in the newly-revamped race. The race, which last year offered a $40,000 purse, saw an increase in value, an increase in grade and the race invitation.
Ridden by Joe Badilla Jr., who returned to riding this year after several years away, DM Streakn Thru Fire came home a neck the best in the 440-yard race in :21.472. He paid $54.60 to win.
DM Streakn Thru Fire is owned by a partnership of Richard Sturdevant, Terry Wootan and Joe David Yates. He was trained by Mike Joiner.
The 6-year-old gelding has now won eight of 28 career starts, and with the $100,000 winner’s check, boosts his career earnings to $658,488.
"We've always known he is a great racehorse," said Yates. "He's had some hard luck in his lifetime, but he's won some big races. He's always been professional and we knew he had these races in him. Today was the right timing. All three of us agree he's the best $5,000 purchase ever!
"Joe Badilla gave him the best break and Mike Joiner has done an amazing job since day one," he added. "California here we come!"
The gelding last year won the Zia Park Championship (G1), which also carried a berth to the Champion of Champions, but he declined the invitation due to the short period between the races. However, DM Streakn Thru Fire has a great deal of stakes experience; has loaded into the gate for 12 Grade 1 events. His Grade 1 stakes appearances include, among others, the All American Futurity, All American Derby, Texas Classic Futurity and Rainbow Derby.
Jesscuzican was second, with Zoomin Away third. Llano Cartel was next, followed by Feature Hero, TF Featured Effort, Handsome Jack Flash, Jody Pops Zoomer, Captain Strawfly and I Azoomed You Knew.
DM Streakn Thru Fire was bred by Don Moler. He is one of 45 stakes winners sired by Walk Thru Fire, who stands at Burns Ranch at Menifee, California. The son of First Down Dash has from 10 crops sired the earners of more than $19.3 million.
Dam Sashay N Six has produced eight winners from 14 starters. She is also the dam of stakes winner DM Red Tide (by Wave Carver, $64,822) and Grade 1-placed DM Strait Up (by Ivory James, $190,370).
