Cashing Teller Takes Speedhorse Futurity

Trainer Rodney Reed sweeps Speedhorse stakes at Fair Meadows.

Favorite and fastest qualifier Cashing Teller lived up to his top billing on Saturday at Fair Meadows as the Oklahoma-bred gelding prevailed by a neck in the $171,650 Speedhorse Futurity (G2). Piloted by Agustin Silva for trainer Rodney Reed, the gelding by the Oak Tree Special stallion Furrtreeous scored with a 350-yard clocking of :17.572.

Bred by Dr. Curtis Smith and owned by Smith and Sheila Reed, Cashing Teller picked up his third win in four starts and boosted his bankroll to $85,969. The only blemish on his record is a second-place finish against allowance foes at Fair Meadows after breaking his maiden at Remington Park and later taking his Speedhorse trial.

Furrtreeous also sired runner-up Play Harder, a colt running for breeder Richard Joneson. CBS Chocoletgold, a gelding by Jess Louisiana Blue, ran third.

The $50,350 Speedhorse Derby went to Jeffrey Strange’s Spit Curl Ten, who scored a game victory under jockey G.R. Carter Jr. Also trained by Rodney Reed, Spit Curl Ten finished second in last year’s Speedhorse Futurity and could have been claimed for $20,000 earlier this year at Remington. This victory was worth $19,133 and improved his record to 12-2-5-3 with earnings of $73,219. Weetona Stanley bred the gelded son of Spit Curl Jess.

Favored Marcar just missed the victory while finishing second, and Delightful Cat was third.
