July 31, 2014
In addition to wrapping up the 2014 Racing Season with a robust list of stakes races, the North Dakota Horse Park will also celebrate the 125th Anniversary of North Dakota's statehood with a lineup of events that will give fans a reason to celebrate.
Saturday will feature the renewal of the $10,000-est. North Dakota Quarter Horse Racing Association Derby, contested among horses that were bred in the state. It is also fitting that the Peace Garden State is known for its hospitality, as later that afternoon it will welcome top contenders from around the nation in the $15,000 AQHA Bonus Challenge, arguably the most anticipated race of the entire meet.
On Sunday the focus will be on North Dakota even more as dashing youngsters try to make a name for themselves in the NDQHRA Futurity. The Northern Plains Futurity, another race with local connections, will be another highlight race featuring a purse of approximately $16,000.
Along with the stakes races, NDHP will card two special races commemorating the anniversary of statehood. Quarter horses will run 125 yards in the “Roughrider Shootout” while thoroughbreds will race 1.25 miles in the “Legendary 125”. First post time for both race days is 1 p.m. Gates open at 11 a.m. and admission is $4.
