Stoli Angel Wins Arapahoe Challenge

Stoli mare earns a berth in the Challenge Championships at Prairie Meadows.

Coming off an allowance win at Ruidoso Downs in May, Stoli Angel went wire-to-wire Saturday afternoon in the $27,180 Merial Arapahoe Distaff Challenge at Arapahoe Park. BF Pieces Of April finished 1½ lengths back in second, followed by Isa Paratus To, who was another length behind in the show position.

A homebred for Garlyn Shelton, Stoli Angel completed the 400 yards in :19.455 to earn a 103 speed index. The $13,318 winner's purse increased the brown miss' earnings total to $77,420. The win also garnered the Stoli filly a starting spot in the $125,000 Merial Distaff Challenge Championship (G1) on October 18 at Prairie Meadows.

Bonifacio Perez rode Stoli Angel for trainer John Hammes. The Texas-bred 4-year-old is from the Eyesa Special mare Eyesa Shaker.

BF Pieces Of April took a big step forward earning her first black-type in the Merial Distaff. She came into the race off a second-place effort in an optional claiming race at SunRay Park. Jason Giles conditions the First Prize Perry filly for James Lynn. She was bred in Utah by Birrell Farms from the Okey Dokey Dale mare BF April Shower. Ridden by Russell Vicchrilli, she earned $5,708 for the effort.

Stepping out of the claiming ranks, Isa Paratus To shipped in from Oklahoma to finish third for owners Trent Alexander and Super 7A Ranch. Also trained by Alexander, the Okey Dokey Dale filly is out of Paratus, by Chicks Beduino. Kelsi Purcell had the riding assignment and earned $2,854.

Completing the field were Heiress Of Debt, Wave Me Bye, Silver Inlay and Barbie Kool. Make Money Zoomin and PYC Pick Your Pocket were scratched.
