Top Runners Out in Cal-Bred Stakes
Cal-Breds shine in Spencer Childers, Matron stakes.

Champion owner and breeder Dr. Ed Allred will be dangerous in the $100,000 Spencer L. Childers Breeders Championship Handicap (RG1) over 400 yards with the consistent stakes horse Once Over at Los Alamitos.
Once Over (Walk Thru Fire-Look Her Over by Check Him Out) comes off a third-place finish in the $163,300 Vessels Maturity (G1) behind Far Niente. The Willoughby-trained gelding won the $25,000 Katella Handicap in March and was second by a neck in the $25,000 Kaweah Bar Handicap (G3) in May.
The Dean Frey-owned and -trained Snowboundbeast (Snowbound (TB)-Going Single by Mr Eye Opener) is a proven stakes horse who is making his second start off a layoff. The 4-year-old gelding closed out his 2013 campaign with a second in the $202,000 Adequan Derby Challenge Championship (G2) at Los Alamitos. In his return on May 25, he made a late run to win a 350-yard allowance race by a nose.
World Champion Stables LLC’s Last To Check Him (Check Him Out-Last Shall Be First by Strawfly Special) returns to action after winning the $20,000 Farnam Stakes last November at Los Alamitos. The 5-year-old mare was moved up to fourth place through a disqualification in last year’s $150,000 Vessels Maturity (G1).
Native Tea Rose Back in Matron
Abigail Kawananakoa’s Native Tea Rose is the distaffer to beat in the $40,000 California Breeders Matron Stakes (RG3) at 400 yards after a pair of important stakes wins last winter.
Native Tea Rose (First Down Dash-St Pats Tea by Mr Jess Perry) won the $35,000 Las Damas Handicap (G3) in December and then started 2014 with a win in the $100,000 Charger Bar Handicap (G2). She fought to a neck win in each of those races for trainer Paul Jones. In her latest start, she faced the boys in her Vessels Maturity trial and finished fourth behind eventual winner Far Niente.
Another member of the Jones barn, Veronica Gail Worth’s Splendiferous Diva (Separatist-Royal Dip by Royal Quick Dash) fits well in the Matron Stakes. She won the $25,000 Denim N Diamonds Handicap in February and then was third in the $25,000 Miss Princess Handicap (G3). In her most recent start, she was fourth in the Native Empress Handicap.
Zory Kuzyk’s Beautiful Fire (Walk Thru Fire-Be Peacefull by Raise A Secret) was second to Significant Heart in the Miss Princess Handicap two starts ago. The Cody Joiner-trained mare then was fourth in an allowance race as the 9-5 favorite.
