Donna Mushinski’s homebred distance specialist Corona La Jolla returns to action preparing for probable longer distances when starts in the $20,000 Harris County Stakes over 550 yards on Saturday night at Sam Houston Race Park.
The Harris County Stakes is the first stakes of the Sam Houston season that begins on Friday night.
Corona La Jolla (Tinys First Corona-Mary La Jolla by Streakin La Jolla) makes his first start since an off-the-board performance in the $55,000 King Rick Rack Stakes in November at Zia Park. The latest time he raced at 550 yards, the five-year-old gelding finished third in the $34,000 TQHA 550 Stakes at Retama Park back in July and then came back the following weekend to win the $15,000 San Marcos Handicap at 870 yards at Retama Park.
Jose Guzman’s JJs Black Lace (Jet Black Patriot-Lethal N Lace by Dash To Chivato) is a 3-year-old making his first start beyond 400 yards. The Brenda Foster-trained gelding defeated Louisiana-breds in a 350-yard allowance race at Louisiana Downs two starts ago and then was disqualified from third in ninth for interference in his most recent race over 400 yards.
Roberts Racing Stables’ JRC Callas First (Winners Award-Calla Missy Jane by Dirty Coup) from a nearly five-month layoff. The Brian Stroud-trained gelding concluded his 2013 campaign with a conditioned allowance win and a close second in a $5,000 starter allowance test, each over 400 yards at Lone Star Park.
JRC Callas First won his only start at 550 yards, a $10,000 conditioned claiming race back in August at Retama Park.
