Millie Vessels Rematch in Las Damas

Top mares rematch at Los Alamitos.

Q-Racing Journal

The Paul Jones-trained top-two finishers in the $150,000 Mildred Vessels Memorial Handicap (G1) – Significant Heart and Check N Fetch – are set for a rematch over 400 yards on Friday night in the $25,000 Las Damas Handicap (G3) at Los Alamitos.

The Mildred Vessels and the Las Damas are each for fillies and mares.

In the 400-yard Mildred Vessels, Significant Heart (Corona Cartel-Jess Significant by Mr Jess Perry) went to the lead at 20-1 odds and held off a late charge from Check N Fetch (Check Him Out-Shyann La Jolla by Streakin La Jolla) and champion Matabari.

Significant Heart won by a neck while Check N Fetch narrowly took second over Matabari.

Abigail Kawananakoa’s Significant Heart scored her second stakes win of the year in the Mildred Vessels and that Grade 1 win put her in consideration for champion aged mare. Back in May, the mare was the 3-5 choice in the $25,000 Miss Princess Handicap (G3) and came through with a one-half length win while leading throughout the 350 yards.

Significant Heart earned that favoritism after finishing a close third, beaten by a neck, in the $25,000 Katella Handicap.

Last year, Significant Heart won the $168,500 PCQHRA Breeders’ Derby (G3) and qualified for the $750,000 Champion of Champions (G1) when she won her $15,000 Z. Wayne Griffin Directors’ Trial by a neck over Hez Our Secret.

Lorena Rodriguez’s Check N Fetch already has a championship title as the 2014 champion aged mare. She earned her title with Grade 1 wins in the $147,750 Mildred Vessels Memorial Handicap and the $100,000 Merial Distaff Challenge Championship.

Check N Fetch, winner of 12 of 25 career starts, has made three starts this year and has been the runner-up on each occasion. She was second by a neck in the $100,000 Charger Bar Handicap (G2) and second by a head in $24,390 Merial Distaff Challenge Championship (G3) before the Mildred Vessels.

Manuel Lorenzana’s Secretly Hot (Walk Thru Fire-Secret Reflection by Raise A Secret) returns to the stakes ranks after winning a 330-yard allowance race in a sharp :16.54 on October 14. She won the 2012 $375,000 Governor’s Cup Futurity (RG2) and the 2012 $20,000 Holiday Handicap.
