Droppin Timber After Third Straight
First Timber gelding looks for another stakes win on Saturday.
October 9, 2014
Frank Greenshaw’s well-traveled Droppin Timber chases his third-straight stakes win when he starts over 870 yards in the $55,000 Herman Jefferson Stakes (G3) at Zia Park on Saturday afternoon.
Droppin Timber (First Timber-Droppindead Gorgeous by Strawfly Special) won the $50,000 Special Hank Handicap at The Downs at Albuquerque on August 9 and then shipped to Fair Grounds to win the $40,000 Faubourg St John Stakes on September 5. Each of those stakes came over 870 yards.
Trained by Orrin Cogburn, Droppin Timber has won four of six outs this year with a third-place run in the $56,390 Remington Park Distance Handicap (G3). That race was the start before his consecutive stakes wins.
Salvador Pimienta’s Emperor Valerian (Heza Fast Dash-Sheeza Lil Val by Dashing Val) won the Remington Park Distance Handicap by one-half length as an 18-1 longshot. The gelding then won the $20,000 Brigand Stakes over 550 yards through a disqualification at Ruidoso Downs.
In his most resent start, Emperor Valerian was the 7-10 favorite in the $33,000 Red Cell Will Rogers Downs Distance Challenge, but stumbled leaving the gate and made a late rush to grab fourth place.
Mexas Racing Team’s Whiteface Eagle (One Famous Eagle-Sing And Pray by Truly First Class) comes off two second-place finishes in 870-yard stakes this summer at Ruidoso Downs. She was second behind the quick Thoroughbred Safe Trip in the $30,000 Fine Loom Stakes and then finished one length behind Wahoo in the $30,000 Master Salls Handicap, her most recent start on August 10.
