Malinche Cattle Company Inc.’s homebred Charal Kid, an earner of $502,660, has the class in the opening night $20,000 Nevill Document Solutions Stakes for Texas-breds at 350 yards on Friday at Lone Star Park.
The 26-date season runs through November 15 and is highlighted by the $1 million-est. Texas Classic Futurity (G1), offering the largest purse in Texas.
Supreme Race Horse Charal Kid is trying to prove that he can continue to be competitive as an 8-year-old at the stakes level. The gelding closed out his 2013 season with a close third, beaten by just a head, in the $75,000 Refrigerator Handicap (G1) at Lone Star Park. He has won 13 stakes races in 51 career outs, including the Grade 1 Dash For Cash Derby and 2012 Refrigerator Handicap.
The Adrian Huitron-trained gelding has made only one start this year, a well-beaten sixth-place run in the $38,000 TQHA Classic Stakes at Retama Park on July 25.
Dude Biggs’ homebred DB Captain King (Captain Courage-Lizarun by Sixarun) has won two of his four starts this year, highlighted by his dead-heat win in the $58,860 Adequan Sam Houston Derby Challenge back in May. Last year, the L.T. “Tooter” Jordan-trained gelding showed his potential when he was second by a neck in the $50,000 Rainbow Juvenile at Ruidoso Downs.
Israel Soliz Jr.’s Sparrow Contender (Contend-Taint Special by Streakin Six) won the $17,000 Simulcast Center Stakes during the Gillespie County Fair in his latest effort. He rolled to a 1 1/4 length win in :16.832 for the 330 yards. Two starts ago, he was third by a head in the $35,000 TQHA 250 Stakes at Retama Park.
