Graded stakes winners Major Moonflash and Jess Got Issues are among the 11 New Mexico-bred sprinters entered in Saturday’s 400-yard, $85,000 Jess Burner Memorial Handicap (RG1) at Sunland Park.

The Jess Burner is the first of 16 American Quarter Horse stakes to be run during Sunland Park’s 72-day meet, which opens Friday. Estimated post time for the stakes is set for 1:35 p.m. (MST).

Major Moonflash is trained by Jason Giles for owners Pierre and Leslie Amestoy of Albuquerque. A 3-year-old son of champion First Moonflash, the gelding will be facing state-bred stakes company off of his fourth-place finish, 1 1/2 lengths behind reigning world champion JRC Callas First, in the 440-yard, $150,000 Zia Park Championship (G1) on November 25.

Major Moonflash has earned $180,781 from 11 starts this season, and his three wins include a one-length victory in the 440-yard, $178,000 New Mexico Cup Derby (RG2) on November 1.

Jess Got Issues is the 5-2 morning-line favorite and has been assigned by racing secretary Robert Junk to tote high weight of 128 pounds. A 5-year-old son of Jesse James Jr racing for Joseph and Debra Meridyth, Jess Got Issues will be making his first start since November 1, when the gelding ran second, a neck behind winner Cinco Menudos, in the 440-yard Namehimastreaker New Mexico Cup Championship (RG1) at Zia Park.
