JRC Callas First Risks Win Streak in Championship at Sunland Park

The Grade 1, $350,000 stakes is one of three American Quarter Horse stakes at Sunland Park on Sunday.

Reigning world champion JRC Callas First will put his four-race win streak on the line in Sunday’s 400-yard, $350,000 Championship at Sunland Park (G1).

A 5-year-old son of Winners Award racing for Dana Stroud and trainer Brian Stroud, JRC Callas First is coming off of a one-length victory in the 440-yard, $150,000 Zia Park Championship (G1) on November 25. The gelding’s streak also includes a head win as the 2-1 favorite in the inaugural running of the 440-yard, $200,000 Downs at Albuquerque Fall Championship on September 27.

JRC Callas First drew post 7 and will be ridden by Damian Martinez.

Other contenders include Oscar Moreno’s Dashin For A Prize. A 4-year-old Heza Fast Dash gelding trained by Mario Loza, Dashin For A Prize ran second to JRC Callas First in the Zia Park Championship and Downs at Albuquerque Fall Championship. The gelding drew post 4 and will be ridden by Esgar Ramirez.

Zoomin Effortlessly, a 4-year-old Zoomin For Bux gelding trained by Edelmiro Carrizales for owner Telesforo Perrett, brings a five-race win streak into this race. The gelding will be making his first career start at Sunland Park off of a half-length win in the 440-yard, $75,000 Refrigerator Handicap (G1) at Lone Star Park on October 3.

Santos Carrizales will ride Zoomin Effortlessly from post 3.

Bella Vista Farms’ BV Midnite Express, a homebred son of Freighttrain B trained by Eddie Lee Willis, is the 5-2 morning-line favorite. BV Midnite Express has earned $659,252 from seven outs this season, and his four wins include a half-length victory in the 350-yard, $1.17-million Heritage Place Futurity (G1) at Remington Park in May.

BV Midnite Express drew post 7 and will be ridden by Russel Hadley.

An overflow field of 12 New Mexico-bred distaffers, topped by morning-line favorite Astica, has been entered in Sunday’s 400-yard, $85,000 Lou Wooten & Sydney Valentini Handicap (RG1).

Astica is a homebred 3-year-old daughter of Jesse James Jr trained by Jason Giles for Mac and Janis Murray’s MJ Farms at Veguita, New Mexico. The filly has won five of six races this season, including three stakes, and has banked $216,263 this season.

Astica drew post 8 and will be ridden by Salvador Martinez.
