New Mexico-bred Downwiththequickness just missed out on a stakes victory against state-bred company in the Jess Burner Memorial Handicap (RG1) last month at Sunland Park, and on Sunday he defeated open company to capture the $50,360 KOFX-Radio Handicap (G2) at 350 yards. Alonso Rivera rode the 4-year-old gelded son of Be Real Quick for breeder and owner Terry G. Smith and trainer Willie Padilla. Sent off at 9-2 odds, Downwiththequickness dashed the distance in :17.070.

This marked the seventh win in 16 career starts for Downwiththequickness, who has now banked $135,997. Last year he won the New Mexico State Fair Breeders’ Derby (R) at The Downs at Albuquerque.

Texas-bred Zoomin Away, a mare by Azoom, closed to take second at odds of 14-1 with Pajarita Sita, the longest shot in the field at 23-1, holding third. Both horses are trained by Gene Burden for the 21 Partnership. Betting favorite Streak Hitter, winner of the Lovington Stakes (G2) at Zia Park in his last outing, bobbled at the start and finished ninth.
