Top Mares Line Up in Charger Bar

Significant Heart, Check N Fetch headline distaff race.

Press Release

Grade 1 winner Significant Heart will look to give owner Abigail Kawananakoa her second straight victory in the Grade 2 $100,000 Charger Bar Handicap when she heads a strong field of mares in Sunday’s 400-yard dash at Los Alamitos. The Charger Bar is the first stakes race at the Cypress oval in 2015 and is scheduled as the eighth race on the card. First post is 5 p.m.

Kawananakoa had a tremendous campaign in 2014. Her Quarter Horses won a total of 24 races with seven of those coming in stakes events. She finished the year ranked ninth in wins and second in stakes wins nationally in the owner standings. Kawananakoa’s first stakes win of 2014 came in Charger Bar courtesy of the outstanding mare Native Tea Rose, but Significant Heart was also responsible for three stakes victories. Trained by Paul Jones, Significant Heart came out on top in the Mildred Vessels Memorial Handicap (G1), the Las Damas Handicap (G3), and the Miss Princess Handicap (G3). The 5-year-old mare by Corona Cartel now looks like a top contender in the Charger Bar and in her most recent win - the Las Damas on November 21 - she beat a field that included five rivals that she’ll face again in the Charger Bar.

Ed Allred, the nation’s leading owner in wins, stakes wins, and earnings in 2014, will be represented by talented young mares Quirky and Sweet TR in the Charger Bar. Trained by James Glenn, Jr., Quirky was much the best when winning the Grade 1 Southern California Derby by 1 1/4 lengths on December 21. The Stel Corona mare lugged inwards in the Southern California Derby after breaking from the outside post 10. She’ll start from the middle of the track after drawing post number six for this event. Carlos Huerta will pilot Quirky. Scott Willoughby will saddle Sweet TR in the Charger Bar. A rising star in this division, Sweet TR won the Paul Ford Handicap at 550 yards in her last outing and has recorded five wins from her last seven outings.

Lorena Velazquez Rodriguez’s 2013 champion aged mare Check N Fetch will start from post number one in search of her first victory since the Grade 1 Merial Distaff Challenge Championship on November 9, 2013. Check N Fetch was a winning machine in 2013, but she was winless last year. She did post three runner-up efforts in stakes races, which included the Charger Bar. Ramon Sanchez will ride Check N Fetch for Paul Jones.

The trainer will also saddle Denim N Diamonds Handicap winner Splendiferous Diva, recent allowance winner Katrina SA, and PCQHRA Breeders Derby runner-up RF One Famous Okey in this race.

The field will be completed by Secretly Hot, The Streakin Clean, and Bolt Lightly, the second, third, and fifth place finishers, respectively, in the Las Damas.
