New Mexico Cup Derby Trials Draw 21 State-Bred 3-Year-Olds

Major Moonflash returns in Sunday's 440-yard trials at Zia Park.

Th 10 fastest qualifiers from Sunday's New Mexico Cup Derby trials will meet in the November 1 final.

A total of 21 state-bred 3-year-olds, including the graded stakes placed Major Moonflash, has been entered in Sunday’s New Mexico Cup Derby (RG2) trials at Zia Park.

The 10 fastest qualifiers will meet in the November 1, $140,000-added New Mexico Cup Derby final.

A sorrel son of champion First Moonflash, Major Moonflash is trained by Wes Giles for owners Pierre and Leslie Amestoy of Albuquerque. The gelding is coming off of a second-place finish in the September 27, 400-yard First Moonflash Stakes (R) at The Downs at Albuquerque.

Major Moonflash has earned $73,562 from eight outs this season, and his resume includes a second-place finish to Astica in the 400-yard, $162,000 Zia Derby (RG2) for state-bred sophomores at Ruidoso Downs on July 25.

Adrian Ramos will ride Major Moonflash from post 2 in the last of three trials. Other prominent 3-year-olds entered in the New Mexico Cup Derby trials include Bobby Simmons’ Hit With Force and Seeyalateralligator, a gelded son of Winners Version racing for Ezra Lee and trainer Jason Giles.

Hit With Force is trained by Rodolfo Valles. A sorrel son of Hard Hitting, the gelding ran second, a neck behind winner Moonstruck Love, in the January 3, 400-yard Shue Fly Stakes (RG2) at Sunland Park.

Hit With Force drew post 4 and will be ridden by Omar Reyes in the second heat.

Seeyalateralligator drew post 2 and will be ridden by Salvador Martinez in the first trial. During the 2014-15 Sunland Park meet, the gelding scored a 1 1/2-length win in the 400-yard, $85,000 New Mexico Horse Breeders’ Association Stakes (RG2).
