Rancho el Alacran’s Mi Viejo, the fastest qualifier and 5-2 morning-line favorite, drew post 6 for Sunday’s 400-yard, $210,000 El Primero del Ano Derby (G3) for sophomore colts and geldings at Los Alamitos.
Mi Viejo is a homebred son of champion Mr Jess Perry trained by Adriana Aceves. The colt is coming off of a half-length victory in the second of three trials on March 13.
Joaquin Vega of Rancho el Alacran named Mi Viejo after his grandfather, who turned 100 on the day the colt was foaled.
“They all referred to their grandfather as Mi Viejo (my old one),” said Aceves.
Rancho el Alacran and Aceves will also be represented by El Compa JV, the second-fastest qualifier and a homebred colt by Mr Jess Perry. El Compa JV won the third trial by 1 1/4 lengths in wire-to-wire fashion.
El Compa JV was foaled just a few hours after Mi Viejo. Translated, El Compa means “my compadre.”
Mi Viejo is coming off of a 2-year-old season in which he won two of nine starts, earned $128,810 and was a finalist in the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Two-Million and Golden State Million futurities. El Compa JV was stakes placed at 2, as he finished third, a half of a length behind winner Thermonuclear Energy, in the 400-yard, $30,000 Los Alamitos Juvenile Invitational Stakes on December 13.
Mi Viejo drew post 6 and will be ridden by Rodrigo Aceves in the El Primero final. El Compa JV will be ridden by Joe Badilla Jr. from post 8.
