Walk Thru Crystal, last year's champion 2-year-old filly, will make her next start in Sunday's 400-yard Golden State Derby (G2) at Los Alamitos.
The 10 fastest qualifiers from the two heats will meet in the $200,000-est. final on August 21.
A sorrel daughter of Walk Thru Fire trained by Yanet Rodriguez for Enrique Gonzalez's EG High Desert Farms, Walk Thru Crystal won her first five outs last season, including the 300-yard, $294,000 Kindergarten Futurity (G2) and 350-yard, $1.049-million Ed Burke Million Futurity (G1). The filly will be coming off of a second-place finish in her sophomore debut, a 300-yard allowance dash on July 10.
Walk Thru Crystal drew post Jesus Ayala in the second trial.
Urschel 3-D Ranch LLC's Rite Regal, a gelded son of Favorite Cartel, will be ridden by Cruz Mendez from post 5 in the second heat. Rite Regal has won his last two races, including the 400-yard, $210,000 El Primero del Ano Derby (G3) on April 3.
Most recently, Rite Regal won a 330-yard allowance race on July 3.
"He pulled up great after that race," said Jose Flores, who trains the gelding. "It was an excellent prep for this trial."
