Dozen New Mexico-Breds Entered in Albuquerque's First Moonflash Maturity Trials

The fastest qualifiers will meet in the August 28 final.

Twelve state-bred aged sprinters have been entered in Sunday's 400-yard First Moonflash Maturity trials at Albuquerque Downs.

Twelve New Mexico-bred aged sprinters have been entered in Sunday’s 400-yard First Moonflash Maturity (R) trials at Albuquerque Downs.

Yaneth Cabrera’s Klassic Strawfly, a 10-year-old son of Genuine Strawfly trained by Ron Stephens, drew post 3 in the first of two trials. Klassic Strawfly has won four of his last five starts, including the May 27, 400-yard Jimmy Drake Stakes (R) at SunRay Park.

Isaias Cardenas will ride Klassic Strawfly on Sunday. The gelding’s five opponents in the first heat include BL Corona, a 5-year-old Southern Corona mare trained by Rene Saucedo for owner Bertha S. Irigoyen. BL Corona ended her 2015 campaign with an upset victory at odds of 40-1 in the 400-yard New Mexico Filly & Mare Championship (R) at Zia Park.

BL Corona drew post 4 and will be ridden by Edgar Martinez.

Dungarees Version, a 4-year-old son of Winners Version trained by Larry Chavez for brothers David Hinkins and Ross Hinkins of Orangevale, Utah, drew post 2 and will be ridden by Benito Baca in the second trial. The gelding prepped for the First Moonflash trials with a one-length victory in a 350-yard, $23,200 second-level allowance dash at Albuquerque on July 31.

The 10 fastest qualifiers will meet in the $150,000-est. First Moonflash Maturity final on August 28.
