Evangeline Downs Ends Meet With a Bang

The track will present four stakes on Saturday, closing night of its fall meet.

Irma Z. Vargas’ Maxx, a gelded son of Pyc Paint Your Wagon and the fastest qualifier, is one of 10 2-year-olds entered back in Saturday’s 400-yard, $100,000-added Evangeline Downs Futurity.

The Evangeline Downs Futurity is one of four stakes scheduled for Saturday, closing night of the track’s fall Quarter Horse meet.

Trained by Rolando Almanza, Maxx is coming off of a wire-to-wire, 1 1/4-length victory in the sixth of 12 trials on November 25. The gelding has won three of six starts, including the 350-yard, $69,000 John Deere Sam Houston Juvenile Challenge (G3) in May, and he was a finalist in the November 12, $1-million Texas Classic Futurity (G1) at Lone Star Park.

Maxx drew post 3 and will be ridden by Manuel Gutierrez.

Other contenders include Platinum Fdd, a gray son of all-time leading sire First Down Dash trained by Adrian Huitron for owner Jose J. Espinoza, and Ruben Garcia Montemayor’s Eye N Capo, an undefeated Capo de Capi gelding also trained by Huitron. Last summer at Delta Downs, Platinum Fdd put together a three-race win streak that included a three-quarter length victory as the 3-2 favorite in the 350-yard, $272,000 Firecracker Futurity (G2).

Raul Ramirez Jr. will ride Platinum Fdd from the rail post.

The second-fastest qualifier, Eye N Capo has won all three of his starts, including the 400-yard, $385,000 Dash For Cash Futurity (G2) at Lone Star Park on October 8. Damian Martinez will ride the gelding from post 6.

Evangeline Downs Derby
Fastest qualifier Ivan James, a graded stakes winning colt by Ivory James, drew post 2 for Saturday’s 400-yard, $50,000-added Evangeline Downs Derby.

Ivan James is coming off of a half-length win in the second of eight trials on November 26. The colt has banked $115,365 from five outs this season, and his three wins include a neck victory at odds of 8-1 in the 400-yard, $195,000 Firecracker Derby at Delta Downs in July.

Raul Ramirez Jr. will ride Ivan James.

Double H Racing Investment’s Politically Corrupt drew post 8 and will be ridden by Manuel Gutierrez for trainer Jose Sanchez. The second-fastest qualifier, the gelded son of Apollitical Jess is coming off of a Lone Star Park campaign during which he ran second, a head behind winner Tellereyematthebar, in the 440-yard, $236,000 Dash For Cash Derby (G3) on October 8.

Also on Saturday, a full field of eight distance specialists has been entered in the 870-yard, $20,000 IP 870 Stakes. Sherree Meridyth’s Executive Trust, a 5-year-old Executive Menace gelding and winner of the 870-yard, $50,000 King Rick Rack Stakes at Zia Park on November 23, drew post 2 and will be ridden by Ruby Gonzalez for trainer Guadalupe Munoz Jr.

Saturday’s 350-yard, $20,000 Sam’s Town Stakes has drawn a full field of 10 aged sprinters, topped by Hugo Morales’ Specials Jess. A 4-year-old Spit Curl Jess gelding trained by Adrian Huitron, Specials Jess will be making his first start since May 29, when he scored a 1 1/4-length victory as the 2-1 favorite in the 400-yard, $70,000 Boyd Morris Stakes (R) for Oklahoma-breds at Remington Park. Damian Martinez will ride Specials Jess from post 4.
