December 15, 2016
Champion Ima Fearless Hero is one of 10 sophomores entered back in Sunday's 400-yard, $168,500 Southern California Derby (G2) at Los Alamitos.
Last year's champion 2-year-old gelding, Ima Fearless Hero will be seeking his first stakes win of his 3-year-old campaign. Ima Fearless Hero has won seven of his 13 starts, all at Los Alamitos, and he has earned $1,045,182. The gelding drew the rail post and will be ridden by Cruz Mendez for owner S-Quarter K LLC and trainer Jose Flores.
Los Alamitos morning-line maker Ed Burgart has made Time For Jess the early 3-1 favorite. A bay daughter of Apollitical Jess trained by Lin Melton for owner Spackman Racing, the stakes-winning filly is coming off of a third-place finish, one length behind winner Big Lew, in the 400-yard, $768,000 Los Alamitos Super Derby (G1) on November 6.
Carlos Huerta will ride Time For Jess from post 7.
