Shue Fly Trials Draw 47 New Mexico-Bred Juveniles
The 10 fastest qualifiers will meet in the January 15, $200,000-est. final at Sunland Park.

A total of 47 New Mexico-bred 2-year-olds has been entered in Friday’s 400-yard Shue Fly Stakes (RG2) trials at Sunland Park.
The 10 fastest qualifiers will meet in the $200,000-est. Shue Fly Stakes final on January 15.
Running Dragon, a homebred daughter of Zulu Dragon racing for By By JJ LLC, is the 8-5 morning-line favorite in the last of five trials. The filly has earned $368,493 from eight starts, and she began her career with a five-race win streak that included a half-length victory in the April 24, 300-yard New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2) at Sunland Park, and a neck victory in the 350-yard, $364,000 Mountain Top Futurity (RG3) at Ruidoso Downs.
Running Dragon drew post 7 and will be ridden by Adrian Ramos for trainer Juan M. Gonzalez.
Mitey Man, a gelded son of First Moonflash trained by Blane Wood for owner Bobby Simmons of Midland, Texas, is the 6-5 morning-line choice in the third heat. Mitey Man has won three of seven starts, including the September 24, 400-yard New Mexico State Fair Breeders’ Futurity (R) at Albuquerque Downs, and he has banked $156,158.
Edwuin Lujan will ride Mitey Man from post 5.
Other prominent state-bred juveniles entered in the Shue Fly trials include Magnifico Dragon and First Kool Moon. A sorrel son of Zulu Dragon, Magnifico Dragon is trained by Cynthia Gonzalez for owner Daniel Balderrama. The gelding is coming off of a Zia Park fall campaign during which he scored a clear 1 3/4-length win in the 400-yard, $310,000 New Mexico Cup Futurity (RG2) on October 30, and ran second, one length behind Imperial Eagle, in the 440-yard, $200,000 Southwestern Juvenile Championship (G1) on December 4.
Magnifico Dragon drew post 2 and will be ridden by Mauro Salcedo in the fourth heat.
Jose Luis Ozuna’s First Kool Moon will be facing New Mexico-bred 2-year-olds for the first time in the Shue Fly trials. A brown son of First Moonflash trained by Paul Jones, First Kool Moon will be making his first start since August 19, when he scored a 1 3/4-length victory in a 440-yard All American Futurity (G1) trial at Ruidoso Downs.
First Kool Moon will be ridden by Manuel Gutierrez in the fourth trial.
