Jessies First Down Headlines Championship at Sunland Park

The 5-year-old gelding looks to end his season with another Grade 1 win.

Jessies First Down, a 5-year-old FDD Dynasty gelding racing for Ted G. Abrams, is one of 10 aged sprinters entered in Saturday’s 400-yard, $350,000 Championship at Sunland Park (G1).

Trained by Judd Kearl, Jessies First Down will be shortening in distance off of victories in the 440-yard, $150,000 Zia Park Championship (G1) on November 23, and the 440-yard, $75,000 Refrigerator Handicap (G1) at Lone Star Park in October. The gelding has won seven of 10 starts and has earned $269,842 this season.

Jessies First Down drew post 8 and will be ridden by Rodrigo Vallejo.

First Valiant Sign will be making his first start at Sunland Park for his owners, Scott Bryant, Joe Dee Brooks, Lee Lewis, R.D. Hubbard, and Derrol Hubbard. A 3-year-old Valiant Hero gelding trained by Mike Joiner, First Valiant Sign is coming off of a head victory as the 2-1 favorite in the 440-yard, $363,000 Texas Classic Derby (G1) at Lone Star Park.

G.R. Carter Jr. will ride First Valiant Sign from post 4.

Other contenders include Zoomin Effortlessly, a 5-year-old son of Zoomin For Bux trained by Edelmiro Carrizales for owner Telesforo Perrett of Houston. Zoomin Effortlessly has won four of six outs this season, all against stakes company, including the 440-yard, $200,000 All American Gold Cup (G1) at Ruidoso Downs on September 4.

Zoomin Effortlessly drew post 9 and will be ridden by Santos Carrizales.
