Cartels Pop Pop, Sr Inseperable Head Retama Park Derby Trials

The fastest qualifiers from Saturday's trials meet in the July 30 final.

Cartels Pop Pop and Sr Inseperable are among the 51 sophomores entered in Saturday’s 400-yard Retama Park Derby (G3) trials at Retama Park.

The 10 fastest qualifiers will meet in the July 30, $50,000-added Retama Park Derby final.<p>
A colt by The Louisiana Cartel trained by Jose Sanchez for owners Chad and Esmeralda Peck, Cartels Pop Pop has won two of his three starts at Retama, including the 350-yard, $414,000 TQHA Sale Futurity (RG2). The colt drew the rail post and will be ridden by Luis Vivanco in the first heat.

Sr Inseperable races for Jorge Aguilera from the barn of trainer Santiago Riojas. A bay daughter of champion Inseperable, the filly brings in a three-race win streak that includes a neck victory in the 350-yard, $71,000 Old South Derby at Delta Downs on May 13.

Esgar Ramirez will ride Sr Inseperable from post 3 in the fourth trial.

Past winners of the Retama Park Derby include 2003 world champion Oak Tree Special.
