First Valiant Sign is Morning-Line Choice for Rich Rainbow Derby

The gelding will be shooting for the winner's share of a stakes-record $1,224,488 purse on Saturday at Ruidoso Downs.

First Valiant Sign, the fourth-fastest qualifier and 2-1 morning-line favorite, is one of 10 3-year-olds entered back in Saturday’s 440-yard Rainbow Derby (G1) at Ruidoso Downs.

This year’s Rainbow Derby will offer a stakes-record $1,224,488 purse. Estimated post time for the stakes is set for 4:38 p.m. (MDT).

A $100,000 buy at the 2014 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale, First Valiant Sign is trained by Mike Joiner for owners Scott Bryant, Joe Dee Brooks, Lee Lewis, R.D. Hubbard, and Derrol Hubbard. The Valiant Hero gelding has earned $696,960 from eight starts, and his three wins include a neck victory in last year’s 350-yard, $750,000 Ruidoso Futurity (G1).

First Valiant Sign is coming off of a one-length win in his Rainbow Derby trial on July 10. The gelding drew post 4 and will be ridden by Cody Jensen.

Esequiel Porras’s Miss Feet Down First, a sorrel daughter of Dominyun trained by Carlos Alvidrez, drew post 9 and will be ridden by Oscar Cordova. The filly ended her 2-year-old season with a four-race win streak that included the 400-yard, $298,000 Hobbs America Futurity (G2) and 440-yard, $200,000 Southwest Juvenile Championship (G1), both at Zia Park.

Fastest qualifier Valiant Rogue, a gelded son of Valiant Hero trained by Judd Kearl for owner Wyok Ranch LLC, is coming off of a half-length victory in the first of 14 Rainbow Derby trials. A finalist in last year’s $1,152,000 Texas Classic Futurity (G1) at Lone Star Park, Valiant Rogue drew post 7 and will be ridden by Tanner Thedford.
