Jess Good Candy, the sport's champion 2-year-old last season, will risk his undefeated record from post 10 in Saturday's 400-yard, $1,098,631 Ruidoso Derby (G1) at Ruidoso Downs.

A homebred son of Good Reason SA trained by Clint Crawford for PV Quarter Horse Farms of Ratliff City, Oklahoma, Jess Good Candy set the fifth-fastest qualifying time with his 1 1/4-length victory in the 10th of 14 trials on May 29. The colt has earned $1,563,478 from six outs, and his two stakes wins include a neck score at odds of 10-1 in last year's 440-yard, $3-million All American Futurity (G1).

Ivan Carnero will ride Jess Good Candy on Saturday. The 2-1 morning-line favorite, his nine opponents include Volcom Bay, the fastest qualifier off of her clear 2 1/2-length win in the third trial. Volcom Bay will be ridden by Rodrigo Vallejo from post 4 for owners Bennie and Teresa Jeter of Alvarado, Texas, and trainer Judd Kearl.

Other contenders include Reliance Ranches' Big Lew, a Utah-bred colt by Corona Cartel trained by Eddie D. Willis and the eighth-fastest qualifier. Big Lew has won five of 11 starts and has earned $112,051, and his resume includes a second-place finish to Tee Chic in last year's $410,000 Oklahoma Futurity (G2) at Remington Park.

Jimmy Dean Brooks will ride Big Lew from post 5.

Hatefulist, a gray son of champion Separatist racing for James G. Markum and Steve Burns from the barn of trainer Paul Jones, began his career with a four-race win streak that ended with his seventh-place finish, 3 1/4 lengths behind Jess Good Candy, in the All American Futurity. The 10th-fastest qualifier, the colt drew post 8 and will be ridden by Sal Martinez.
