Stakes Doubleheader Saturday at Retama Park

Retama Park will present a stakes doubleheader on Saturday.

Hez Gone, a bay son of Gone To The Mountain owned and trained by Jose R. Espinosa, is one of 10 juveniles entered back in Saturday’s 350-yard, $112,000 TQHA Sires’ Cup Futurity (RG3) at Retama Park.

The third-fastest qualifier, Hez Gone has won two of three starts and has banked $36,300, and his resume includes a fifth-place finish, one length behind winner Just Call Me Carter, in the 330-yard, $540,000 Sam Houston Futurity (G2) on April 23. The gelding drew post 2 and will be ridden by Cipriano Vidana.

Fastest qualifier Katharsis broke her maiden with a clear 1 1/2-length victory in the second of seven trials on June 17. The gray daughter of American Runaway drew post 7 and will be ridden by Eddie Sanchez for owner Emmanuel Villarreal and trainer Angel Sanchez.

TQHA Sires’ Cup Derby
Pete Scarmardo’s Kid Can Dash, a homebred son of Down N Dash and the fastest qualifier, drew the rail post for Saturday’s 400-yard, $40,000 TQHA Sires’ Cup Derby (R).

Trained by Leon Bard, Kid Can Dash is coming off of a three-quarter length win in the second of two trials on June 18. The gelding has banked $48,490 from 10 outs.

Kid Can Dash will be ridden by Francisco Calderon. Other contenders include Jesse M. Gibson’s Careless Lightning, a gray gelded son of American Runaway trained by Gilbert Aguirre III. Careless Lightning has earned $160,764 from nine starts, and his four wins include a half-length score in last year’s 350-yard, $151,000 John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship (G2) at Lone Star Park.

Careless Lightning drew post 3 and will be ridden by Larry Payne.
