Top Sophomores Headline Dillingham Handicap

A strong group of 3-year-olds line up for Saturday's stakes at Los Al.

Press Release

Headed by multiple Grade 1 finalist Mi Viejo, El Primero Del Ano Derby (G3) runner-up My Favorite Check, and James Smith Memorial Handicap winner Freakish, a strong group of sophomore colts and geldings will get together for the running of the $25,000 Dillingham Handicap at 400 yards on Saturday night at Los Alamitos. First post for the attractive eight race program is 6:30 p.m.

Trained by Adriana Aceves for Rancho El Alacran, Mi Viejo was very impressive when posting a come-from-behind victory while recording the fastest qualifying time to the El Primero Del Ano Derby on March 13. The colt by Mr Jess Perry broke in and bumped at the start of that race, but quickly recovered to post a 1/2 length trial win. Mi Viejo had a tough start in the final, as he bumped hard at the start of the race and this time he finished in fifth place.

A Golden State Million and Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity finalist last season, Mi Viejo will be tough to beat if he can enjoy a decent break from post number two. Rodrigo Aceves will ride.

Ron Hartley’s My Favorite Check has never finished worse than second in his six-race career and figures to be a major player in this event. He finished only a head behind Rite Regal in the El Primero and was a winner of the Los Alamitos Maiden Stakes earlier this year. Francisco Diaz’s Freakish and Paul Jones and Thompson Racing, Inc’s Flay, the first and second place finisher in the James Smith, are top threats in this race as well. Otta Be A Prize and Los Plan B complete the field.
