Champions Ima Fearless Hero and Walk Thru Crystal are among the 34 sophomores entered in Saturday's 400-yard Los Alamitos Super Derby (G1) trials.

A homebred Valiant Hero gelding trained by Jose Flores for Don and Kathy Meneely's S-Quarter K LLC of Kennewick, Washington, Ima Fearless Hero was last year's champion 2-year-old gelding. Ima Fearless Hero is coming off of a troubled 10th-place finish in the 400-yard, $177,000 PCQHRA Breeders' Derby (G3) on September 30. According to Flores, the gelding came out of the race with some cuts.

"We were fortunate that the cuts were very tiny," the trainer added. "He's ready for these trials."

Ima Fearless Hero drew post 2 and will be ridden by Cruz Mendez in the third of five heats.

Last year's champion 2-year-old filly, Walk Thru Crystal races for Enrique Gonzalez's EG High Desert Farms from the barn of trainer Yanet Rodriguez. The daughter of Walk Thru Fire is winless in four starts this season, and she is coming off of a third-place finish, 1 3/4 lengths behind winner Kickin Seis, in the 330-yard, $15,000 Fall For It Handicap on September 16.

Jesus Ayala will ride Walk Thru Crystal from post 3 in the third trial.

Other prominent 3-year-olds entered in the Los Alamitos Super Derby trials include graded stakes winners Flay and Rite Regal. The 2-1 morning-line favorite in the third heat, Flay races for Thompson Racing Inc. and trainer Paul Jones. The homebred Favorite Cartel colt will be making his first start since July 30, when he scored a half-length victory against older horses in the 400-yard, $100,000 Spencer Childers California Breeders' Championship (RG1).

Rite Regal is the 7-5 morning-line choice in the first trial, and Flores trains the Favorite Cartel gelding for Urschel 3-D Ranch LLC. Rite Regal has won his last four races, including the 400-yard, $203,000 Golden State Derby (G2) and 400-yard, $210,000 El Primero del Ano Derby (G3).

The 10 fastest qualifiers will meet in the November 5, $802,750 Los Alamitos Super Derby final. The winner will earn the $322,455 winner's share of the purse and a berth in the 440-yard, $600,000 Champion of Champions (G1) on December 10.
