Champion Quirky is Topweight in Millie Vessels
The 5-year-old mare will look to defend her title Sunday at Los Alamitos.
September 22, 2016
Ed Allred's Quirky, a homebred 5-year-old daughter of Stel Corona and last year's champion aged mare, is one of 10 distaffers entered in Sunday's 400-yard, $100,000 Mildred N. Vessels Memorial Handicap (G1) at Los Alamitos.
Assigned to carry top weight of 129 pounds by racing secretary Ed Reese, Quirky has won both of her outs this season, including the 400-yard, $100,000 Charger Bar Handicap (G1) for fillies and mares in January. The mare scored a half-length victory in last year's Mildred N. Vessels Memorial Handicap.
Quirky drew post 10 and will be ridden by Eulices Gomez. Her nine opponents include Lucky Seven Ranch's Sass Me Blue, a 4-year-old Valiant Hero mare trained by Mike Casselman. Sass Me Blue ran second, a head behind Quirky, in the Charger Bar.
Sass Me Blue drew post 6 and will be ridden by Cody Jensen.
