Katella Deli Headlines $224,100 El Primero del Ano Derby

The Foose gelding is the 2-1 morning-line favorite.

Katella Deli is the morning-line favorite for Sunday's El Primero del Ano Derby at Los Alamitos.

Katella Deli, a gelded son of Foose racing for Dutch Masters III and Paul Blanchard, is the 2-1 morning-line favorite for Sunday's 400-yard, $224,100 El Primero del Ano Derby (G3) at Los Alamitos.

Trained by Jaime Gomez, Katella Deli has won two of his three starts this season, including the first of three El Primero del Ano Derby trials on March 12. The gelding has earned $280,352 from 10 outs, and he is coming off of a 2-year-old campaign during which he ran third, a neck behind winner Worth Doing, in the $1.95-million Los Alamitos Two-Million Futurity (G1) in December.

Katella Deli drew post 9 and will be ridden by Carlos Huerta. Other contenders include That Rico, a Carters Cartel gelding campaigned by Thompson Racing Inc. and trainer Paul Jones. The fastest qualifier, That Rico has won four of eight races, including two of three since he was reported as a gelding on December 7, 2016, and he has banked $21,375.

That Rico drew post 6 and will be ridden by Roberto Hernandez.
