Zoomin For Spuds, a homebred 4-year-old son of Zoomin For Bux racing for Jim Walker and last year's champion sophomore gelding, drew the rail post for Sunday's 400-yard, $150,900 Los Alamitos Winter Championship (G1).

The winner will earn a berth in this year's 440-yard, $600,000 Champion of Champions (G1).

Zoomin For Spuds ended his 3-year-old campaign with a head victory at odds of 10-1 in the Champion of Champions on December 10. During the year, the gelding earned $352,581 from nine outs, and he was named Pacific Coast Quarter Horse Racing Association horse of the year.

Zoomin For Spuds will be ridden by Jesus Ayala for trainer Monty Arrossa.

"This one is for 84-years-young Jim Walker, who has spent over 40 years breeding Quarter Horses," said Arrossa on the night that Zoomin for Spuds was named PCQHRA Horse of the Year.  "Jim is Mr. Positive and the reason that all this has happened. I came up with the crazy idea of paying him into the Z. Wayne Griffin Directors Trials and Jim said 'Let's do it.'

"He is always ready to try a challenge and it paid off with Zoomin For Spuds," he added. "This shows that small breeders can still achieve great things in this sport."

Other contenders include Bill Hoburg's Bh Lisas Boy, a homebred 5-year-old Mighty Invictus gelding trained by John Cooper. The fastest qualifier and 8-5 morning-line favorite, Bh Lisas Boy is coming off of a wire-to-wire, 1 1/2-length victory in the second of two trials on January 27.

Bh Lisas Boy has won 11 of 21 starts, including last year's 440-yard, $73,000 Bank of America Los Alamitos Championship Challenge (G3), and he has banked $256,878. The gelding drew post 9 and will be ridden by Cesar DeAlba.

"There's no telling how good this horse really is," Cooper said.
