Darling Farms' Hold Air Hostage, a sorrel son of Apollitical Jess and the fastest qualifier, is the 3-1 morning-line favorite for Saturday's 440-yard, $1.15-million Rainbow Derby (G1) at Ruidoso Downs.

Hold Air Hostage made his Ruidoso debut with a dominating 2 1/4-length victory in the fifth of 11 Rainbow Derby trials on July 9. The gelding won two of his four starts during the Remington Park spring meet, including the 400-yard, $297,000 Heritage Place Derby (G2) on June 3.

Hold Air Hostage drew post 8 and will be ridden by Rodrigo Vallejo. The gelding's nine opponents include three Grade 1 winners, headed by High Plains Perry. Trained by Trey Wood for owner Paragon Farms LLC, High Plains Perry has earned $536,660 from eight starts, and he ended his 2-year-old campaign with a head victory in the 400-yard, $1-million Texas Classic Futurity (G1) at Lone Star Park.

High Plains Perry drew post 3 and will be ridden by Ricky Ramirez.

Nueve Racing's Apolltical Chad, the winner of last year's $1-million Rainbow Futurity (G1), drew the rail post and will be ridden by Larry Payne for trainer Wes Giles. Apolltical Chad has banked $664,026 from eight outs, and he ended his juvenile season with a fourth-place finish in the 440-yard, $3-million All American Futurity (G1), American Quarter Horse racing's richest and most prestigious race.

In addition to Hold Air Hostage, Kearl, the reigning AQHA champion trainer, will send out Duponte. A homebred son of American Runaway owned by Bobby D. Cox, Homero Paredes and Kristen Paredes, Duponte is coming off of a 1 1/2-length win in the first Rainbow Derby trial.

Duponte has earned $676,015 from 11 starts, and his six wins include a one-length score in last year's $1.083-million Heritage Place Futurity (G1) at Remington Park. The colt drew post 6 and will be ridden by Jose A. Alvarez.

The Rainbow Derby will be telecast live on RIDE-TV, a horse-focused television network. The telecast, which will begin at 5 p.m. (EDT), will be hosted by veteran horse racing analyst Tom Dawson.
