Apolltical Chad Draws Outside Post for Grade 1, $1-Million Ruidoso Derby

The gelding seeks his second Grade 1 win on Saturday.

Nueve Racing's Apolltical Chad, pictured here in the post parade before last year's All American Futurity, is one of 10 sophomores entered back in Saturday's Grade 1, $1-million Ruidoso Derby.

Nueve Racing's Apolltical Chad, the 5-2 morning-line favorite, drew the outside post for Saturday's 400-yard, $1-million Ruidoso Derby (G1) at Ruidoso Downs.

A sorrel son of Apollitical Jess trained by Wes Giles, Apolltical Chad made his 3-year-old debut with a 1 3/4-length victory in the fifth of 12 trials on May 28. The gelding has won three of six starts, including last year's 350-yard, $1-million Ruidoso Futurity (G1), and he has earned $623,626.

Apolltical Chad was a $38,000 buy at the 2015 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale. Adrian Ramos will ride the gelding in the Ruidoso Derby final.

Firing Tools, the fastest qualifier, races for Michael and Beth Harper, who acquired the Walk Thru Fire gelding for $67,000 at the 2015 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale. Trained by Toby Keeton, Firing Tools is coming off of a dominating four-length win in the 11th trial.

Firing Tools has won three of six outs and has banked $37,964 and he ended his juvenile campaign with an eighth-place finish in the 400-yard, $1-million Texas Classic Futurity (G1) at Lone Star Park. The gelding drew post 6 and will be ridden by Esgar Ramirez.

Other contenders inlcude High Plains Perry, a gelded son of champion Mr Jess Perry trained by Trey Wood for owner Paragon Farms LLC. An earner of $455,780 from six outs, High Plains Perry boasts a three-race winning streak that includes a head victory in the Texas Classic Futurity (G1).

High Plains Perry drew post 8 and will be ridden by Ricky Ramirez.
