Staggering Stride Returns in La Primera del Ano Derby Trials

The filly is one of 28 3-year-old fillies entered in four 400-yard heats.

A total of 28 3-year-old fillies has been entered in Saturday's La Primera del Ano Derby trials at Los Alamitos.

Abigail K. Kawananakoa's Staggering Stride, a sorrel daughter of Mr Jess Perry trained by Chris O'Dell, is one of 28 sophomore fillies entered in Saturday's 400-yard La Primera del Ano Derby (G3) trials at Los Alamitos.

Staggering Stride is coming off of a fourth-place finish, one length behind winner Imaqtpie, in the 400-yard, $225,000 Los Alamitos Winter Derby (G1) on February 11. An earner of $35,618 from 10 outs, the filly drew post 6 and will be ridden by Cody Jensen in the first of four trials.

Other prominent 3-year-olds entered include Jess Mas and Ilikethewayshewalks. Jess Mas is trained by Elena Andrade for owners Steve Burns and Oscar Andrade. A homebred filly by One Sweet Jess, Jess Mas was a finalist in last year's Grade 1, 400-yard Los Alamitos Two-Million Futurity. Jesus Rios Ayala will ride Jess Mas from post 4 in the first trial.

Ilikethewayshewalks races for Burns from the barn of trainer Mike Casselman. A homebtred daughter Walk Thru Fire, the filly made her season debut with a head victory in the 330-yard, $15,000 Seal Beach Handicap on January 28.

Ilikethewayshewalks will be ridden by Ramon Sanchez from post 7 in the third trial.

The 10 fastest qualifiers from Friday's trials will meet in the April 1, $220,400 La Primera del Ano Derby final.
