The fastest qualifier draws post 2 for Saturday's stakes at Los Alamitos.
March 30, 2017
A full field of 10 sophomore fillies, topped by fastest qualifier Sweet Aguila, has been entered back in Saturday's 400-yard $220,400 La Primera del Ano Derby (G3) at Los Alamitos.
Sweet Aguila is a homebred daughter of One Sweet Jess trained by Yanet Rodriguez for Enrique Gonzalez' EG High Desert Farms. The filly is coming off of a half-length victory in the third of four trials on March 11, and she has earned $20,075 from nine outs.
"She's not fast out of the gates, but she finishes strong," said Rodriguez of Sweet Aguila. "She's a filly we've had trouble with because it's hard to maintain her weight. We've gotten her to eat now."
Sweet Aguila drew post 2 and will be ridden by Jesus Ayala. The filly's nine opponents include Abigail K. Kawananakoa's Staggering Stride. A sorrel Mr Jess Perry filly trained by Paul Jones, Staggering Stride ran fourth, one length behind winner Imaqtpie, in the 400-yard, $225,000 Los Alamitos Winter Derby (G1) on February 11.
The 3-1 morning-line favorite, Staggering Stride drew the rail post and will be ridden by Cesar DeAlba.
