May 10, 2017
Start Somethin Bad, a homebred daughter of Pappasito trained by Paul Jones for owners Jeff Alstadt and Kim Pitcher, drew post 5 for Friday's 350-yard, $25,000 La Pacifica Handicap for 3-year-old fillies at Los Alamitos.
Start Somethin Bad will be shortening up off of her nose victory in the 400-yard, $220,000 La Primera del Ano Derby (G3) on April 1. The gray filly has been assigned to carry top weight of 125 pounds by racing secretary Ed Reese.
An earner of $95,043 from three outs this season, Start Somethin Bad will be ridden by Ramon Sanchez. Her nine opponents include Abigail K. Kawananakoa's Staggering Stride, a sorrel filly by champion Mr Jess Perry trained by Chris O'Dell and the 3-1 morning-line favorite. Staggering Stride is coming off of a third-place finish, a head behind Start Somethin Bad, in the La Primera, and she was a finalist in the 400-yard, $225,000 Los Alamitos Winter Derby (G1) in February.
Staggering Stride drew post 6 and will be ridden by Cody Jensen.
