Two-Year-Olds in Spotlight in Utah on Saturday

Saturday's Laurel Brown program includes trials for Beehive, South Valley futurities.

Laurel Brown Racetrack near Salt Lake City opens its season on Friday. Saturday's 12-race card features trials for the Beehive and South Valley futurities.

Two sets of futurity trials are part of Saturday’s 12-race program at Laurel Brown Racetrack near Salt Lake City, Utah.

Saturday’s 350-yard Beehive Futurity trials have drawn 61 juveniles. Sb Hoonigan, a stakes-winning son of Jr Dynasty Mountain trained by Alvaro Torres for owner Steve Berry, drew post 6 in the seventh of eight trials. Sb Hoonigan is coming off of a head victory in the 300-yard, $74,000 Hadley/Giles Memorial Futurity at Weber Downs in Ogden, Utah.

Sb Hoonigan will be ridden by Jesus Canales. The homebred gelding’s seven opponents in the seventh heat include Giovanni Ortiz’s Yourdarkestnitemare, a California-bred daughter of Favorite Cartel trained by Martha Maldonado. Yourdarkestnitemare will be stretching out in distance off of her third-place finish, a neck behind Sb Hoonigan, in the Hadley/Giles Memorial Futurity.

Jose Guzman will ride Yourdarkestnitemare from post 4.

The 10 fastest qualifiers will meet in the June 17, $80,000-est. Beehive Futurity final.

Also on Saturday, 21 2-year-olds have been entered in three 330-yard South Valley Futurity. Aron Saenz’s Hitt The Spot, a California-bred colt by Hard Hitting trained by Jorge Garfias, drew post 2 and will be ridden by Oscar Cervantes in the third trial. Hitt The Spot made his debut with a head victory in a 300-yard maiden-special-weight dash at Weber Downs on April 22.

The 10 fastest qualifiers will face off in the $20,000-est. South Valley Futurity final on June 17.
