Graded stakes winners This Is An Eagle and Three Bar Cartel are among the 100 2-year-olds entered in Friday’s 400-yard EVD Futurity trials at Evangeline Downs.
A dozen trials will be contested, starting at 5:35 p.m. (CST). The 10 fastest qualifiers will meet in the December 16, $100,000-added EVD Futurity final.
The $100,000 sale topper at last year’s Texas QHA Yearling Sale in San Antonio, This Is An Eagle is trained by Larry Kopycinski for owner Mary G. Lynne Thompson of Navasota, Texas. The One Famous Eagle colt has earned $297,038 from six outs, and his four wins include a half-length victory as the 6-5 favorite in the 330-yard, $484,000 Sam Houston Futurity (G2) on April 29.
This Is An Eagle is coming off of a third-place finish, a half of a length behind winner Thecartelofmiracle, in the 400-yard, $847,000 Texas Classic Futurity (G1) at Lone Star Park on November 11. The colt drew post 5 and will be ridden by Francisco Calderon in the 11th trial.
Three Bar Cartel has won both of his outs, including the 400-yard, $354,000 Dash For Cash Futurity (G2) at Lone Star Park September 30. A gray Capo de Capi gelding trained by Alonso Neri for owner Ruben Garcia Montemayor, Three Bar Cartel drew post 5 and will be ridden by Damian Martinez in the ninth heat.
Other prominent stakes winners entered in the EVD Futurity trials include Rancho Herradura LLC’s Sixes Flash, a sorrel son of Streakin Sixes trained by Erasmo Hernandez. Sixes Flash broke his maiden with a neck victory at odds of 13-1 in the 350-yard, $274,000 Firecracker Futurity (G2) at Delta Downs on July 1. The colt will be ridden by Rolando Cabrera from the rail post in the ninth trial.
