Evil Genius, a son of Favorite Cartel owned by Abigail Kawananakoa and trainer Paul Jones, is one of 37 3-year-olds entered in Saturday's 400-yard PCQHRA Breeders' Derby (G3) trials at Los Alamitos.
Evil Genius is coming off of a neck victory at odds of 14-1 in the 400-yard, $203,000 Governor's Cup Derby (RG3) on July 29. The gelding has earned $93,305 from 13 outs while racing exclusively in California.
"This horse has found his stride in his 3-year-old year," said Jones of Evil Genius. "He ran a nice race in the Governor's Cup Derby trials, but he came back and ran an unbelievable race in the final. He's just getting better and better with more maturity and a little age to him."
Evil Genius drew the rail post and will be ridden by Oscar Peinado in the first of five trials.
Other prominent sophomores entered in Saturday's trials include EG High Desert Farms' Jess Hawk, a homebred daughter of One Sweet Jess trained by Valentin Zamudio. The filly will be making her first start since February 11, when she ran second, three-quarters of a length beind winner Imaqtpie, in the 400-yard, $225,000 Los Alamitos Winter Derby (G1).
Jess Hawk drew post 2 and will be ridden by Cesar DeAlba in the second heat.
The 10 fastest qualifiers will meet in the October 6, $184,000 PCQHRA Breeders' Derby final.
