Thecartelofmiracle to Make Sophomore Debut in Sam Houston Derby Trials
The Grade 1 winner will be competing for a spot in the April 28, $191,900 final.

Mauro Luciano Villarreal's Thecartelofmiracle, a Grade 1 winner during his juvenile campaign, will make his 3-year-old season debut in Friday's 350-yard Sam Houston Derby (G3) trials at Sam Houston Race Park.
A gelded son of Tough And Good trained by Abelardo Flores Jr., Thecartelofmiracle will be making his first start since November 11, when he scored a neck victory in the 400-yard, $874,000 Texas Classic Futurity (G1) at Lone Star Park. He drew post 5 and will be ridden by Manuel Gutierrez in the first of eight trials.
Other prominent 3-year-olds entered in Friday's trials include graded stakes winners Nymeria and This Is An Eagle. Nymeria is a Bigtime Favorite filly trained by Abelardo Flores Jr. for owner Alfredo Garza. Nymeria will be making her first sophomore start off of a 2-year-old campaign during which she earned $495,042 from six outs and won the 350-yard, $1.155-million Heritage Place Futurity (G1) at Remington Park.
Nymeria drew post 9 and will be ridden by Manuel Gutierrez in the second heat.
This Is An Eagle is a son of One Famous Eagle trained by Leon Bard for owner Mary G. Lynne Thompson of Navasota, Texas. The sorrel colt began his juvenile season with a four-race win streak that included a half-length victory as the 6-5 favorite in the 330-yard, $484,000 Sam Houston Futurity (G2).
This Is An Eagle will be ridden by Francisco Calderon from post 3 in the third trial.
The 10 fastest qualifiers will meet in the $191,900 Sam Houston Derby final on April 28.
