Israel Bordier’s Major Bites,a 5-year-old son of Jesse James Jr, will make his first official start in nearly six months in Sunday’s 440-yard, $75,000 First Moonflash Maturity (R) for New Mexico-breds at Albuquerque Downs.
Major Bites will be stretching out in distance off of his wire-to-wire, half-length victory as the odds-on favorite in the 350-yard, $85,000 Mesilla Valley Speed Handicap (RG2) at Sunland Park on March 3. The bay gelding won two of his three starts during the 2017-18 Sunland meet, including the 440-yard, $85,000 Dona Ana County Stakes (R) on January 28.
Major Bites drew post 9 and will be ridden by Juan Pulido. His nine opponents include David Bloomer’s Mamacita Cartel and Benjamin Calderon’s First Note Medley. A homebred 4-year-old daughter of Big Daddy Cartel trained by Cynthia Gonzalez, Mamacita Cartel has banked $61,140 from four outs this season, and her three wins include a neck victory in the 400-yard, $39,000 Jimmy Drake Stakes (R) at SunRay Park in May.
Mamacita Cartel drew post 5 and will be ridden by Edgar Martinez.
First Note Medley is coming off of a second-place finish, one length behind winner Cartels Star Daddy, in the 400-yard, $50,000 Zia Handicap (RG2) at Ruidoso Downs on July 29. The 5-year-old gray son of First Moonflash drew post 3 and will be ridden by Jose Enrique Ortiz for trainer Gabriel Gama.
