A field of 10 3-year-olds, headed by Lisa Anderson’s Moonie Blues and EG High Desert Farms’ Matilda Czech, has been entered back in Saturday's 400-yard, $215,450 Los Alamitos Winter Derby (G1) at Los Alamitos Racecourse.
A homebred daughter of Freighttrain B trained by Jaime Gomez, Moonie Blues ended her juvenile campaign with a second-place finish, 1 1/2 lengths behind winner and champion J Fire Up, in the 400-yard, $1.745-million Los Alamitos Two-Million Futurity (G1) on December 17. The filly has won five of nine starts and has earned $356,719 while racing in California and Idaho.
Moonie Blues drew post 3 and will be ridden by Eduardo Nicasio.
Matilda Czech is a homebred Fast Prize Cartel filly conditioned by Lorenzo Campuzano. An earner of $310,050 from 10 outs, all at Los Alamitos, Matilda Czech ran second, a nose behind J Fire Up, in the 400-yard, $939,000 Golden State Million Futurity (G1) in November.
Matilda Czech drew post 5 and will be ridden by Cruz Mendez.
Fortuna Properties Inc.'s Ditto Head, the fastest qualifier, races from the barn of trainer Mike Casselman. A two-time graded futurity qualifier last year, the gelded son of champion Foose made his 3-year-old debut with a neck victory in his Winter Derby trial on January 20.
“I think (his trial) will give him some confidence because he didn’t break well and he had to go up through the horses,” Casselman said. “(Jockey Cesar Gomez) said he just dug in and went to the front.”
Gomez will ride Ditto Head from post 9 in the final.
The complete lineup, in post position order including jockey assignments and morning-line odds:
Twenty One Gunz (G. Jairo Rangel), 10-1
Yanque (Ramon Sanchez), 6-1
Moonie Blues (Eduardo Nicasio), 4-1
