Thermonuclear Energy, a graded stakes winning daughter of Walk Thru Fire, will make her 5-year-old debut in Sunday's 400-yard, $100,000 Charger Bar Handicap (G1) at Los Alamitos.

Trained by Chris O'Dell for the Parsons Family Limited Partnership, Thermonuclear Energy is coming off of a wire-to-wire, 1 1/2-length victory in the 400-yard, $50,000 Las Damas Handicap (G3) on November 25. The mare drew post 7 and will be ridden by Eduardo Nicasio.

Other contenders in the Charger Bar, the season's first Grade 1 stakes, include Paragon Farms LLC's Jess Good Reason and Time For Jess. Trained by Paul Jones, Jess Good Reason ended her 2017 season with a fourth-place finish, three-quarters of a length behind winner Mr PYC To You, in the 440-yard, $750,000 Champion of Champions (G1) on December 16.

Jess Good Reason, a 5-year-old daughter of Good Reason SA, drew post 3 and will be ridden by Oscar Peinado. Time For Jess has moved from the barn of Lin Melton to the barn of Jones. A 5-year-old Apollitical Jess mare, Time For Jess banked $117,495 from nine outs last year, and her season resume included a nose victory in the 400-yard, $100,000 Mildred N. Vessels Memorial Handicap (G1) on September 24.

Time For Jess drew post 8 and will be ridden by Ramon Sanchez.

Headed by Tom Lipar of Conroe, Texas, Paragon Farms recently purchased Jess Good Reason and Time For Jess.

"I've been in the racing business full time for about 4 1/2 years," Lipar said. "The first year, I started breeding horses. I've been racing horses for the past two years. My whole idea was to race horses that I raised. My good friend Charlie Patterson has owned horses for several years. Whenever he had a nice colt or filly, he would invite me to join him at the races.

"He owned (multiple stakes winner) Morning Snow; she missed qualifying to the Los Alamitos Million Futurity because of a huge rain storm during her trial," he added. "I got to enjoy racing through Charlie and horses like Morning Snow."

Lipar plans to be on hand to watch Jess Good Reason and Time For Jess race in the Charger Bar.

"We feel they're top mares, and as broodmares we'll try to put them with top stallions that they can match up with," he said. "We're looking at One Famous Eagle and Tempting Dash, and I have a share in Corona Cartel."
