January 17, 2018
Larry Stark's Jess A Cowboy, a homebred 6-year-old son of the Mr Jess Perry stallion Dejon, heads a field of eight sprinters in Friday's 350-yard, $25,000 Cypress Handicap at Los Alamitos.
Trained by Matt Fales, Jess A Cowboy will be making his season debut and has been made the 3-1 morning-line favorite by Los Alamitos morning-line maker Ed Burgart. The gelding is coming off of a second-place finish, a half of a length behind winner Fighter Gone Wild, in the December 31, 440-yard Turf Paradise Championship.
Jess A Cowboy drew post 2 and will be ridden by Cruz Mendez. Other contenders include Stelfast, a 4-year-old Stel Corona stallion trained by Valentin Zamudio for owner Eva Carrazco. Stelfast is coming off of a sophomore campaign during which he earned $131,454 from 10 starts and won two stakes at Los Alamitos, including the 400-yard, $224,000 El Primero del Ano Derby (G3) in April.
Stelfast drew post 5 and will be ridden by Ramon Sanchez.
