A total of 40 3-year-olds, headed by Lisa Anderson's Moonie Blues and EG High Desert Farms' Matilda Czech, has been entered in Saturday's 400-yard Los Alamitos Winter Derby (G1) trials at Los Alamitos Racecourse.
The even-money morning-line favorite in the third of five trials, Moonie Blues is a homebred daughter of Freighttrain B trained by Jaime Gomez. The filly earned $355,369 from eight starts during her 2-year-old season, which she concluded with a second-place finish, 1 1/4 lengths behind winner J Fire Up, in the December 17, 400-yard Los Alamitos Two-Million Futurity (G1).
Moonie Blues drew post 8 and will be ridden by Eduardo Nicasio.
Matilda Czech is a homebred Fast Prize Cartel filly conditioned by Lorenzo Campuzano. Matilda Czech is coming off of a juvenile campaign during which she earned $306,750 from nine races and ran second, a nose behind winner J Fire Up, in the 400-yard, $939,000 Golden State Million Futurity (G1) in November.
Matilda Czech has won five races, including the 350-yard, $25,000 California Breeders' Freshman Fillies Stakes (R) in July. The filly drew post 7 and will be ridden by Cruz Mendez in the second heat.
Other prominent Winter Derby trials entries include Lesley Joyner's Jesstacartel, a homebred son of One Sweet Jess trained by Mark Skeen. Jesstacartel has won his last four outs, including the October 14, 350-yard Autumn Handicap, and the November 18, 400-yard Corona Chick Handicap.
Jesstacartel drew post 6 and will be ridden by Cruz Mendez in the fifth trial.
The 10 fastest qualifiers will return for the $215,450 Los Alamitos Winter Derby final on February 10.
