Thermonuclear Energy, a homebred 5-year-old Walk Thru Fire mare owned by the Parsons Family Limited Partnership, has been assigned to tote 126 pounds in Saturday's 400-yard, $35,000 Ivan Ashment Handicap for fillies and mares at Los Alamitos.
Trained by Chris O'Dell, Thermonuclear Energy will be making her first start since January 7, when the mare finished second, a neck behind winner Kiddy Up Cowgirl, in the 400-yard, $100,000 Charger Bar Handicap (G1). She was coming off of a 4-year-old campaign during which she earned $58,350 from six outs and scored a clear 1 1/4-length victory in the 400-yard, $50,000 Las Damas Handicap (G3).
Thermonuclear Energy drew post 7 and will be ridden by Eduardo Nicasio.
The Ivan Ashment Handicap honors the memory of the late Ivan Ashment, a longtime owner and breeder of racing Quarter Horses who died in 1986. The breeder of several champions, including 1977 champion 2-year-old Town Policy, Ashment was inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in '97.
