Eight state-bred distance specialists have been entered in Saturday's 870-yard, $25,000 Magnolia Stakes (R) at Louisiana Downs.
Defending Magnolia Stakes champion Jw Who Dat, a 7-year-old son of Agouti owned by Giovanni Barron, is the 2-1 morning-line favorite. The gelding was a two-time 870 stakes winner during the 2018 Louisiana Downs meet, as his resume also included a one-length victory in the 870-yard, $15,000 Marathon Stakes.
Jw Who Dat has won nine of 33 starts, including five of ninie at the 870-yard trip, and he has earned $127,542, of which $81,650 has been banked at the 870 trip. The gelding drew post 2 and will be ridden by Antonio Alberto for trainer Eric Palacio.
Jw Who Dat is coming off of a third-place finish in this year's Marathon Stakes, which was run on January 12.
“He needed the race, and the win at Evangeline took a lot out of him,” said Alberto, referring to Jw Who Dat's wire-to-wire, 1 1/2-length victory in an 870-yard, $12,000 open-condition allowance at Evangeline Downs on December 15. “I’m hoping for a decent pace this Saturday so he’ll have plenty of gas for the finish.”
The complete lineup, in post position order including jockey assignments and morning-line odds:
Rakin In the Jax (Luciano Duenez), 3-1
Jw Who Dat (Antonio Alberto), 2-1
Im Mighty Fast (Jose Rodriguez), 8-1
Tm Dees Shine (Noe Castaneda), 10-1
