The Favorite Cartel gelding is the morning-line favorite for the season's first Grade 1 derby
February 7, 2019
Rosenthal Ranch LLC's Powerful Favorite, a California-bred son of Favorite Cartel and the 9-5 morning-line favorite, heads a field of 10 sophomores entered back in Saturday's 400-yard, $198,700 Los Alamitos Winter Derby (G1) at Los Alamitos Racecourse.
Powerful Favorite made his 3-year-old debut with a one-length victory in the last of four Winter Derby trials on January 19. The gelding has earned $321,461 from 10 races, all at Los Alamitos, and his four wins include a neck win in last year's 350-yard, $380,000 Governor's Cup Futurity (RG2).
Powerful Favorite drew post 6 and will be ridden by Eduardo Nicasio for trainer Chris O'Dell. His nine opponents include Cole Man 47, a graded stakes winning Stel Corona gelding trained by Paul Jones for owners Steve McIntyre and Marin Jones. Cole Man 47 is coming off of a 2-year-old campaign during which he won two stakes, including the 350-yard, $365,000 PCQHRA Breeders' Futurity (G2) in October.
Cole Man 47 drew post 8 and will be ridden by Ramon Sanchez.
